Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece of doomed love and midnight lakes, staged by Ormond Ballet in May 2025.

The Story

Prince Siegfried, restless on the eve of his birthday, follows a flight of swans to a moonlit lake — and watches one transform into Odette, a princess cursed by the sorcerer Von Rothbart to live as a swan by day. Only a vow of true love can break the spell, and Siegfried swears it.

At the palace ball, Von Rothbart arrives with his daughter Odile — the Black Swan — transformed to mirror Odette in every way. Dazzled, Siegfried declares his love for the wrong woman, and the vow is broken. He races back to the lake, where the lovers’ final act of devotion defeats the sorcerer’s curse forever.

Principal Roles

Role The dancer’s challenge
Odette, the White Swan Liquid line, sorrow, impossible stillness
Odile, the Black Swan Glitter, cunning — and 32 fouettés
Prince Siegfried Noble partnering and soaring solos
Von Rothbart Menace in every wingbeat

The dual Odette/Odile role is one of the most demanding in all of ballet — one ballerina, two opposite souls.
